Opposition Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj has raised concerns that certain members of the Opposition have been persuaded to support a proposed Bill aimed at amending the 2013 Constitution for personal gain. He stated, “Some of our Opposition members have been lured to actually vote in favour of this particular Bill in order to gain benefit. It’s open, everybody knows about that,” indicating a growing unease within the party regarding loyalty and integrity.
Maharaj is calling for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to step back from the current Bill and instead initiate a motion to establish a Parliamentary Select Committee with representation from both the Government and the Opposition. He believes that this committee should conduct public consultations across Fiji, gather input from citizens, and present a report to Parliament. This approach aligns with a broader sentiment expressed in recent political discussions, where the emphasis has been placed on transparency, inclusivity, and collaboration within the legislative process.
Previously, Maharaj and other Opposition figures have advocated for bipartisanship and clear communication about proposed constitutional changes, stressing the importance of clarity to avoid misunderstandings and conspiracy theories within the community. This call for cooperation resonates particularly as the political landscape in Fiji experiences a shift towards more collaborative governance, which could prove beneficial for the nation’s future.
The dialogue surrounding these constitutional amendments highlights the potential for significant reform driven by open discussion and public engagement, ultimately aiming to enhance the democratic processes in Fiji. The ongoing scrutiny from the Opposition reflects their commitment to holding the government accountable, which can foster a more transparent and responsive political environment.
In light of recent events, there is hope that through constructive dialogue and cooperation, Fiji can emerge with a governance framework that genuinely represents the aspirations and rights of its citizens, paving the way for a more stable and equitable society.
