Fiji’s Political Storm: Calls for Accountability Amid Controversial FICAC Developments

The Fiji Labour Party (FLP) has urged the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) to promptly charge Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad for allegedly filing multiple false declarations with the Registrar of Political Parties.

In a statement, FLP Leader Mahendra Chaudhry noted that the Registrar of Political Parties had referred Prasad’s case to FICAC for violations of the Political Parties Act. He stated that FICAC completed its investigation, but efforts to bring charges against Prasad were disrupted by the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner, as well as the forced resignation of Francis Puleiwai, the Acting Assistant Deputy Commissioner who oversaw the investigation.

Chaudhry mentioned that Puleiwai had approved the charges and formally informed that Prasad was being charged with multiple offenses under Section 24(1)(b)(iv) of the Political Parties Act. The former Prime Minister expressed concern over the troubling developments at FICAC and their impact on the integrity of the rule of law.

He emphasized that it is now essential for Malimali’s FICAC to proceed with the charges to maintain its credibility as an independent institution. He called for accountability for Prasad, who he claims has evaded responsibility for too long.

Chaudhry also stated that Malimali, who was reportedly under investigation by FICAC for abuse of office prior to her appointment, should step aside to avoid any conflict of interest during her own investigation.

Additionally, he urged FICAC to expedite its investigations into six other Cabinet ministers who are facing complaints. Chaudhry noted that the public is demanding justice, a sentiment reflected in the widespread outcry on social media regarding the recent events at FICAC and the inaction of those in power.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad stated that his lawyers have contacted FICAC to reject the allegations against him, directing all inquiries to his legal team.
