Elections in Paradise is a documentary film that offers a reflective glimpse into Fiji’s political landscape, distinct from being a political film. This significant work, helmed by filmmakers Dave Lavaki and Tumeli Tuqota, highlights the sociological aspects of Fiji’s politics through an autoethnographic approach, presenting voices and experiences of Fijians discussing their political realities. It aims to create a dialogue about past political events, particularly addressing the emotional weight of historical coups that have impacted many Fijians.

The film’s international screening tour, which includes Australia and New Zealand, is associated with the Living Democracy Exhibition in collaboration with the University of London’s School of African Studies. This tour, supported by Fiji Airways and the Pacific Knowledge and Culture Hub at the University of Canterbury, offered an opportunity for community engagement through talanoa sessions following the screenings.

In Christchurch, during the Te Waipounamu South Island 2024 Fiji Day Celebration, the film was introduced as a safe space for discussions. According to Tuqota, these gatherings allow Fijians to express long-suppressed emotions regarding the coups, fostering a sense of community and reflection. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro’s presence in the audience marked a notable first, illustrating the film’s relevance in current public discourse.

Lavaki emphasized the film’s critical perspective on both historical and contemporary governance, asserting that recognition of past mistakes can be integral for national growth. The screenings not only resonate with audiences, who find relatability in the experiences portrayed, but also cultivate discussions around socio-economic issues and the future trajectory of Fijian politics ahead of the 2026 general elections.

As the filmmakers continue their efforts to engage the Fijian community through this documentary, it symbolizes a hopeful move toward greater political awareness and dialogue in Fiji. This initiative not only honors the past but also encourages a proactive approach to addressing contemporary challenges, fostering a culture of open discussion in the nation’s political landscape.

Overall, “Elections in Paradise” serves as a powerful medium for examining Fiji’s political psyche, offering insights that could inspire future generations to engage thoughtfully in their country’s governance.
