Fiji’s Political Management: A Call for Change

The president of the People’s Alliance New Zealand (PANZ), Sai Lelea, has urged the party to enhance its approach to political management. Speaking at the party’s general assembly in Lautoka last Friday, he emphasized that transparency and accountability should be central to their governance efforts.

Mr. Lelea highlighted the need for improvement in the party’s operational strategies, noting a growing perception that the leadership is often reactive, focusing on crisis management instead of proactive governance. He expressed concerns that this approach distracts Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and his ministers from establishing a clear vision for the government.

To address these issues, he called for the implementation of systems that would allow leaders the necessary space to lead. He encouraged government ministers to promote open communication, ensuring that key policies and programs are easily accessible and understandable for all Fijians, regardless of their location.

Mr. Lelea proposed hiring political experts as advisors under civil service regulations to provide valuable insights and mentorship to ministers, helping them to concentrate on their responsibilities effectively. He also suggested creating regular ministerial engagement opportunities with overseas voters, utilizing platforms like radio programs and Zoom sessions to maintain direct communication and connection with Fijians living abroad.

He stressed the importance of fostering a sense of community, ensuring that every citizen, both domestically and internationally, feels heard, respected, and engaged. Mr. Lelea stated that it is essential to involve overseas voters in decision-making processes, recognizing their significant ties to Fiji and emphasizing the necessity of continuous engagement beyond election periods.

He also pointed out that modern technology can eliminate barriers posed by distance, thus facilitating meaningful consultations with expatriates on important legislative and reform matters. This ongoing dialogue, he noted, could further strengthen democracy and align governmental actions with the perspectives of citizens living outside the country.
