Fiji’s Political Landscape Shifts with New Party Launch

Abel Camillo, a resident of Nadi and a former member of the We Unite Fiji party, has taken significant steps to establish a new political organization named “The Lion of Judah Party.” This initiative follows his engagement in the 2022 general election, highlighting his ongoing commitment to the political landscape in Fiji.

Camillo has formally reached out to the Registrar of Political Parties to reserve the party name, stating in his letter, “On behalf of the core group for The Lion of Judah Party I wish to see your kind assistance in reserving the proposed party name.” He has also begun the process of collecting signatures, a requirement for the party’s registration.

According to Fijian electoral laws, new political parties are mandated to gather at least 5,000 signatures from registered voters across the four divisions of Fiji to ensure broad support. This requirement is crucial for progressing to the official application phase. Recently, Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa noted a noticeable increase in political activity, with ten new political parties having reserved names, joining the existing seven registered parties.

This wave of interest in new political parties, including Camillo’s initiative, indicates a shifting political atmosphere in Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his support for these emerging parties, recognizing their role in enhancing electoral competition and providing voters with more varied options that cater to their aspirations. Such developments reflect a higher level of engagement from the electorate, pointing to a collective desire for better governance and representation.

The changing political scene in Fiji signals a promising move towards a more vibrant democracy. With the approach of the 2026 elections, the increasing number of political parties fosters optimism for a more inclusive and representative political system that aligns with the needs of its citizens.
