Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the People’s Alliance Party is inviting the Group 11 Bloc in Parliament to participate in the upcoming 2026 General Election. He made this statement in light of recent political shifts, notably the decision by Independent MPs Sachida Nand and Salen Kumar to join the opposition’s Group 9 Bloc, which supports the Coalition Government.
Rabuka emphasized that the invitation to collaborate is open to all members, including those he has yet to meet. He stated, “It’s open to everyone even those that I have not come across,” signifying a welcoming approach to broaden collaboration within the political landscape.
This development follows the government’s recent challenges in securing the necessary support from 41 MPs to advance the second reading of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025. The announcement aligns with ongoing discussions between Rabuka and various political parties, as seen in previous meetings with leaders from the National Federation Party and the Social Democratic Liberal Party. These interactions indicate a positive reception among coalition partners regarding the inclusion of Independent MPs, which could enhance legislative support moving forward.
In related developments, the nine Independent MPs who have rallied behind Rabuka reaffirmed their support without seeking positions in the Cabinet, thereby acting as a crossbench group in Parliament. Their commitment to collaborate with the government may foster a more inclusive political environment, encouraging engagement from diverse voices in Fiji’s governance.
This evolving political narrative reflects a responsive approach to citizen representation, emphasizing collaboration and unity in addressing pressing national issues. As Fiji approaches the 2026 elections, these dynamics could lead to a more vibrant democratic engagement, offering hope for greater representation and accountability.
