Chaudhry indicated that discussions have been underway between the two parties, focusing on holding the government accountable for its failure to conduct local government elections, which are now proposed for 2025 instead of 2024 as originally promised. He confirmed the completion of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the parties, stating, “This is the result of discussions between our parties and a technical committee we appointed, which has now completed its review.”
Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube corroborated the ongoing talks, noting that while the MOU has not yet been officially signed, both parties are enthusiastic about pursuing this potential collaboration. He emphasized the urgency of addressing the local government elections, expressing skepticism regarding the current government’s commitment to fulfilling this promise.
Both leaders acknowledged that while the immediate focus is on local elections, the prospects of a joint campaign for the 2026 General Election are also on their agenda, suggesting that discussions on this front will commence once there is clarity on the local elections.
