Fiji’s Political Landscape: Change, Challenges, and Cultural Bonds

Different dimensions

Many individuals have taken time to reflect on the freedom to express their opinions now that the oppressive oversight of their previous authorities has diminished. As the political landscape evolves, it appears that Mr. Seruiratu and Mr. Usamate are striving to make their voices heard. Regardless, those on the other side continue their efforts.

92-year-old writer

Reaching the age of 92 is a rare achievement, and a former politician has chronicled his remarkable political journey in a book that is likely to inspire aspiring politicians. Hon. HC Sharma’s accomplishment in writing a book at this stage in life exemplifies the saying, “Wine improves with age.” He deserves deep respect.

Reject PACER Plus

At a Pacific Island Aviation Conference, I saw the potential drawbacks of PACER Plus, which appeared to primarily benefit Australia, leading me to vote against it. With its resurgence, I urge caution against agreeing to it.

Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a significant festival celebrated across our nation, symbolizing the bond of protection between siblings. The event, held on the Purnima day of August during the Shravan month, honors the duty and love shared between brothers and sisters, regardless of their biological ties. This day emphasizes the uniqueness of sibling relationships and the essential role they play in society. It’s a moment to cherish sibling love, and I wish everyone a joyful celebration.

Record collection

With the FRCS achieving record revenue collection, it seems promising that many of Fiji’s issues could be addressed. The Minister of Finance expresses great excitement over the milestone. In hindsight, there are thoughts that perhaps a higher VAT rate could have yielded even greater revenue, but congratulations are in order for this achievement, which will likely be celebrated upon the PM’s return.

Thoughtful questions

I resonate with Nilesh Lal’s perspective that the current constitution requires not a complete overhaul, but rather a new approach to propel the nation forward. While Nilesh commends various aspects, he overlooks significant flaws in the electoral process highlighted by Daniel Fatiaki. It is crucial to honor the concerns of Indigenous peoples and address the current Constitution’s shortcomings before seeking to create a harmonious society.

Liquor and poverty levels

To promote safety and tackle poverty, I propose adjusting liquor trading hours. Ending sales between 1 am and 9 am could prevent irresponsible alcohol consumption that often leads to troubling behavior, while fostering a safer environment for early morning activities, particularly for vulnerable individuals. The funds saved from alcohol expenditures could contribute to daily necessities.

Government vehicles

I concur with Jone Usamate that there is an issue with the misuse of government vehicles. We often observe negligent driving, including overtaking on double lines. For instance, a recent incident involving a police vehicle resulted in damage with no accountability from the driver. It’s essential to address the behavior of individuals operating government vehicles to ensure accountability and safety.

World Humanitarian Day

In 2023, humanitarian workers faced unprecedented dangers, a trend that may worsen. This highlights a critical failure in safeguarding those who serve vulnerable populations. Attacks on both humanitarian workers and civilians must stop, and those in power need to take responsibility. This year’s theme for World Humanitarian Day, “The Human Race,” aims to raise awareness about the effects of climate change on the most vulnerable, underscoring the collective responsibility to support humanity in crisis.

Constitution amendment

As discussions around amending our flawed Constitution gain traction, some voices advocate for a cautious approach. However, immediate amendments to Section 160, altering the requirements for future amendments, should be prioritized. Simplifying the threshold for amendments will enable necessary changes to be made effectively, ensuring that we do not miss the opportunity for progress in future legislative terms.

Renewable energy

Despite Fiji’s commitment to advancing renewable energy, the EFL’s increased reliance on fossil fuels and rising diesel consumption raises concerns. There is an apparent disconnect between the organization’s actions and the commitment to sustainable energy practices.
