The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has issued a strong condemnation of the acts of violence perpetuated by the Fiji Police Force. The Commission highlights that police brutality represents a serious violation of human rights and erodes the public’s trust in law enforcement agencies.
In its statement, the FHRADC stressed that the police, as the custodians of public safety, are obligated to uphold the law with integrity and professionalism while treating every individual with both respect and dignity. Recent troubling reports regarding excessive force by police officers have raised significant concerns.
The Commission has received three recent complaints related to alleged human rights violations by police. Notably, these include an incident in Nausori where a bystander reportedly experienced physical assault, and a case involving a man held in custody for two weeks in the Northern division, who also faced physical abuse. Additionally, there was an allegation of the use of excessive force during a caution interview aimed at extracting a confession.
The FHRADC is calling for an urgent, impartial, and transparent investigation into these allegations, asserting that those responsible must face accountability. Restoring faith in the justice system hinges on this accountability, ensuring that such troubling events do not happen again.
Furthermore, the Commission urges the Fiji Police Force to prioritize comprehensive training in human rights for all officers. Emphasizing the significance of restraint, de-escalation techniques, and respect for human dignity in their community interactions is essential.
This call for reform and accountability provides a glimmer of hope that through dedicated efforts, the Fiji Police Force can improve its relationship with the public and better protect the rights of all individuals. By fostering an environment of trust and respect, the potential for positive change within the policing system can pave the way for a safer and more just society for everyone.
