The Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, has called on police officers to uphold the highest levels of professionalism in their duties. This reminder comes in light of a recent incident in which a police officer was allegedly observed engaging in drug dealing at Labasa Market, as captured by CCTV footage.

Minister Tikoduadua stressed the critical role that integrity plays within the police force. “Fiji requires police officers who are dedicated to enforcing the law,” he stated. “There is a clear path to professionalism: follow the law, enforce the law, and report any misconduct.” He reaffirmed that police officers are not above the law.

He pointed out that police accountability to the public is essential, noting that actions like those of the implicated officer erode the trust communities place in law enforcement. “Such behavior complicates efforts to rebuild public trust in the police force. Trust is something that must be earned, and it is essential for the integrity of our institutions,” he emphasized.

Minister Tikoduadua also made it clear that the public does not expect police involvement in illegal activities, particularly concerning drugs. He urged that investigations must proceed appropriately while expressing the importance of respecting the legal process to ensure justice is served.

This situation serves as a pivotal moment for the police force in Fiji, presenting an opportunity to reinforce standards of integrity and professionalism, ultimately enhancing community trust and the effectiveness of law enforcement. Holding officers accountable for their actions can lead to a stronger relationship with the public and reaffirm the commitment to justice.

In summary, the Minister’s remarks reflect a proactive approach toward maintaining the integrity of the police force, emphasizing professionalism and the need for accountability to rebuild community trust.
