Fiji’s Police Force Calls for a Bold ‘Reset’ to Tackle Evolving Crime

Crime is evolving, and criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated. In response to this trend, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has called for a new policing strategy. He addressed law enforcement officers at the Fiji Police Force’s 150th anniversary parade in Nasova recently.

Minister Tikoduadua introduced the concept of the “Police Reset,” emphasizing that it extends beyond a mere strategy; it represents a commitment to transform the operational methods of the Fiji Police Force in the face of a rapidly changing societal landscape.

“Crime does not remain static; it evolves, and we understand this more than ever,” he remarked. “From advanced cybercrime to the rising issues of organized crime and drug-related offenses, the challenges we confront have never been more complex.”

To tackle these emerging threats, Tikoduadua stated that the Police Reset aims to equip officers with the necessary skills, tools, and resources. He described the initiative as a means to create a more agile and responsive police force that is accountable to the public and closely connected to the communities it serves.

“This is not about continuing old practices,” he clarified. “It is about rethinking our approach to protection and service.”

The minister indicated that the transformation would necessitate investments in technology, equipment, and personnel. He highlighted that training, professional development, and a renewed focus on integrity and service will be vital components of this shift.

Additionally, he announced an increased emphasis on community policing, asserting that genuine safety arises not just from enforcing laws but also from fostering trust and collaboration with the communities they are sworn to protect.
