Fiji’s PM Launches FICAC Inquiry Amid Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced an inquiry into the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) that aims to investigate the actions of others. Mr. Rabuka clarified that this will not be a Board of Inquiry into FICAC itself, but rather a Commission Inquiry to understand what transpired under previous leadership.

He noted that while decisions and processes cannot be altered, there may have been individuals who engaged in inappropriate conduct. The Prime Minister acknowledged criticisms regarding the circumstances surrounding Barbara Malimali’s resignation from her role as chair of the Electoral Commission and her subsequent appointment as FICAC Commissioner.

He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uphold the integrity of the appointment process. Ms. Malimali’s appointment faced scrutiny following remarks from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, who questioned the lack of notification to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) regarding her resignation.

Mr. Rabuka, who chairs the COC, admitted he was also unaware of Ms. Malimali’s resignation at the time and revealed he received official notification from the COC secretariat only ten days after she assumed the FICAC role.
