Fiji’s PM Calls for Constitutional Review: A Step Towards Unity?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his support for amending the 2013 Constitution, stating that the government is committed to reviewing it. In a recent address to Parliament, he emphasized that the Constitution delineates state power, imposes limitations on the state regarding its citizens, and safeguards fundamental rights. Rabuka stressed the need for accountability from those in power to the populace.

Highlighting the significance of consensus in a diverse nation like Fiji, Rabuka underscored that the Constitution should reflect the views and ownership of all communities within the country. He acknowledged the historical challenges faced since the changes initiated in 1987, noting that awareness of ethnic dynamics has evolved globally.

Rabuka quoted the late Archbishop Petero Mataca, who remarked on the unity and collective belonging of all individuals in Fiji, regardless of their origins or length of residence. He warned against the dangers of weaponizing ethnic differences, which have resulted in turmoil in various parts of the world.

The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of democracy, emphasizing the need for open dialogue and the consideration of differing opinions as Fiji moves forward.
