Fiji’s Permanent Secretaries Reappointed: What Lies Ahead?

The Public Service Commission, with the approval of the Prime Minister, has reappointed six Permanent Secretaries following a thorough recruitment process. PSC Chairperson Luke Rokovada stated that these leaders will guide their respective ministries into a new phase of growth and development.

Rokovada emphasized that the reappointment decision was made after a rigorous evaluation. He noted that the Commission determined that the six Permanent Secretaries were best positioned to continue leading their ministries, thanks to their comprehensive knowledge, proven success, and clear vision for the future.

Pita Tagicakirewa has been reappointed as the Permanent Secretary for I-Taukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage, and Arts until November 2025. Seema Sharma will serve as Permanent Secretary for Local Government until December 2025. Yogesh Karan will lead as Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and the Sugar Industry until December 2025. Shaheen Ali has been reappointed as the Permanent Secretary for Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, also until December 2025.

Susan Kiran will continue as Secretary to Cabinet until June 2026 and will take on the role of Permanent Secretary for Information starting September 2, 2024. Lastly, Dr. Raijeli Taga has been reappointed as Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, with a planned reassignment to a new Ministry in October 2024.

Rokovada highlighted that all reappointed Permanent Secretaries are Fijian nationals, showcasing Fiji’s growing talent pool and the Civil Service’s ability to attract and retain high-caliber professionals.
