Fiji’s Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, assured that Fijian soldiers serving in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are not impacted by the rising tensions in the Middle East. In a recent address to Parliament, he noted that only one Fijian officer is currently deployed to UNIFIL in Lebanon, along with personnel serving in the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO).
Tikoduadua emphasized the preparedness and safety of these troops, stating that they adhere strictly to Standard Operating Procedures and are backed by well-developed contingency plans for potential evacuation. The Ministry maintains ongoing communication with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ headquarters, with the commander overseeing peacekeeping troops deployed globally being stationed at Blackrock.
The minister reiterated that ensuring the safety and welfare of peacekeepers is a foremost concern for the Coalition Government. He mentioned that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) receives daily updates from the field and is ready to respond promptly to any emerging situations.
Furthermore, Tikoduadua revealed that discussions are ongoing with the United Arab Emirates regarding the temporary stationing of RFMF troops and equipment to improve readiness in the region. A government delegation is set to visit the Middle East early next year to assess ground conditions, evaluate potential reinforcements, and acknowledge the support Fijian peacekeepers receive.
Lastly, Tikoduadua stated that plans are underway to send seven of the fourteen Bushmaster vehicles to the UNDOF mission area, although this initiative faces challenges due to vehicle entry restrictions imposed by both the Syrian and Israeli governments.
This proactive approach taken by the Fijian government showcases their commitment to the safety of their peacekeepers and underscores the importance of international cooperation in maintaining peace and stability in conflict-prone regions. With a delegation visiting soon, there is hope that conditions can improve further, reinforcing Fiji’s dedication to global peacekeeping efforts.
