Fiji’s Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, has affirmed that Fijian soldiers deployed with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are currently safe amid the rising unrest in the Middle East. During a recent address to Parliament, Tikoduadua noted that only one Fijian officer is stationed with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), alongside personnel working in the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO).

Tikoduadua emphasized that Fijian troops are well-prepared and adhering to strict Standard Operating Procedures, equipped with comprehensive contingency plans for potential evacuation if necessary. He highlighted the Ministry’s consistent communication with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces headquarters, while the joint taskforce commander at Blackrock oversees the peacekeeping units deployed internationally.

The safety and welfare of these peacekeepers is a paramount concern for the Coalition Government. Tikoduadua mentioned that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is receiving daily updates from personnel on the ground and is ready to respond swiftly to any challenges that may arise.

He also revealed ongoing discussions with the government of the United Arab Emirates regarding the temporary deployment of RFMF troops and equipment to enhance operational readiness. To further assess the situation, a government delegation is scheduled to visit the Middle East early next year to evaluate the conditions, review reinforcement and contingency strategies, and express gratitude for the support offered to Fijian peacekeepers.

Additionally, while considering the possibility of sending seven out of fourteen Bushmaster vehicles to the UNDOF mission area, Tikoduadua pointed out that regulations imposed by both the Syrian and Israeli sides pose challenges to vehicle entry into the demarcated area.

This proactive approach by the Fijian government demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the safety of its peacekeepers while effectively engaging in international peacekeeping efforts. The planned visit and ongoing discussions signal a hopeful outlook for enhancing peace and stability in the region.
