Fiji’s Path to Unity: Will the Great Council Approve the Term ‘Fijian’?

The National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) Taskforce in Fiji is urging the Prime Minister to obtain formal approval from the Great Council of Chiefs regarding the use of the term “Fijian” as the designation for all citizens of Fiji. During the report’s launch, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua emphasized that this is a positive step forward and he plans to advance the initiative.

The report noted that some stakeholders believe that adopting “Fijian” as a national identity can unite the population, enhancing social cohesion. Furthermore, it suggested that referring the matter to the Great Council of Chiefs, who safeguard the indigenous Fijian identity, represents an important act of reconciliation.

This recommendation allows the Council to deliberate on the topic, following the example of their ancestors who ratified the Deed of Cession on October 10, 1874, thereby leaving a significant legacy and showing their commitment to the welfare of the nation. The report asserted that such a reconciliation effort would greatly enhance social cohesion within the country.
