Fiji’s Path to Unity: The Role of Truth and Reconciliation

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that the immunity provisions outlined in the 2013 Constitution will not hinder the consultation process of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC). He emphasized that the journey toward truth and reconciliation is essential for fostering unity within Fiji.

“This is something the country must, and should do,” Mr. Rabuka expressed, highlighting that the findings from the ongoing consultation process will influence the direction of the FTRC.

He acknowledged the positive public response to the consultations, which have involved participation from former politicians, community leaders, religious figures, NGO representatives, and private citizens. This turnout underscores the necessity for open and honest discussions regarding the political challenges faced in the past.

“I appreciate everyone who took the time to attend these public forums, and I have taken note of the sincere and constructive discussions that took place,” he said.

The Prime Minister also recognized Sashi Kiran and her assisting ministers—Sakiusa Tubuna, Lenora Qereqeretabua, Jovesa Vocea, and Ratu Isikeli Tuiwailevu—for their significant contributions to this crucial initiative.
