Fiji’s Path to Unity: Can We Embrace Equality for All?

Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasizes the importance of embracing equal citizenship for all residents of Fiji as essential for the nation’s development, peace, and prosperity. In his Diwali message, he reflects on the festival’s symbolism, celebrating the victory of good over evil and the enlightenment that comes with knowledge, which leads to happiness.

Chaudhry expresses concern that despite promoting the idea of unity in diversity, Fiji continues to struggle with achieving true unity amid its complexities. He points out that no single community can thrive independently, citing historical evidence from the four coups that have shaped the nation’s past. He underlines the interdependence of Fiji’s diverse ethnic groups—iTaukei, Indian, Rotuman, Part-European, Chinese, and other Pacific Islanders—and their collective need for socio-economic stability.

He asserts that peace cannot be realized in an environment of inequality, urging the nation to eliminate all forms of race-based discrimination, which persists despite constitutional prohibitions. Chaudhry highlights the potential for change with the proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission, advocating it as an opportunity to address these issues.

Focusing on the youth, he stresses they hold a significant stake in the reconciliation process and should be encouraged to contribute meaningfully to shaping a brighter future. He calls on the elders to guide and support the younger generation, who will carry forward the legacy of peace amid future challenges.

Chaudhry’s message is a call to action for both the youth and elders of Fiji to unite and build a peaceful community, emphasizing that collaboration is vital for the common good. The path forward requires overcoming differences and empowering the younger generation to take ownership of the peace-building process.

This message of unity and empowerment is a hopeful reminder that with collective effort, Fiji can work towards a harmonious future, alleviating past challenges and fostering a society where every citizen stands together as one.
