Fiji’s Path to Truth: Will Reconciliation Be Achieved Before Elections?

Fiji Labour Party (FLP) leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized the need for the truth and reconciliation process to be completed well ahead of the upcoming elections. Speaking at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) meeting with political parties in Suva, Chaudhry highlighted the importance of achieving genuine reconciliation without compromising democracy and the rule of law.

He stressed that the entire process, from the appointment of the TRC to the submission of its final report to the President, should be characterized by transparency, independence, inclusivity, and credibility. Chaudhry pointed out that the TRC must focus on uncovering the truth behind the political upheavals and coups that occurred in 1987, 2000, and 2006, and ensuring justice for the victims.

“There cannot be genuine reconciliation without justice,” he asserted. He further noted that the coups had significantly impacted Fiji’s development, causing the nation to lag about three decades behind and inflicting suffering on numerous families.

Chaudhry expressed a desire for practical outcomes that foster sustainable pathways toward improved race relations and promote trust, understanding, and respect among citizens. He also urged that the draft Bill be made accessible to all political parties and the general public.

He was joined at the meeting by FLP vice-president Monica Raghwan and advisers Miriama Raiyawa and Satish Kumar.
