Fiji’s Path to Truth: Can Reconciliation Happen Before Elections?

Fiji Labour Party (FLP) leader Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized the importance of completing the truth and reconciliation process prior to the upcoming elections. During a meeting with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and political parties in Suva this week, Chaudhry stressed the need for authentic reconciliation that respects the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

Chaudhry asserted that the entire process, from the TRC’s appointment to the submission of its report to the President, should be conducted in a transparent, independent, inclusive, and credible manner. He highlighted that the TRC should primarily focus on uncovering the truth surrounding Fiji’s political upheavals and coups in 1987, 2000, and 2006, while ensuring justice for the victims.

“There cannot be genuine reconciliation without justice,” he stated, noting that the coups have significantly hindered Fiji’s development, contributing to a regression of approximately three decades and bringing hardship to numerous families.

Chaudhry advocated for practical outcomes that would foster sustainable progress in race relations, promoting trust, understanding, and respect among all citizens. He also called for the draft Bill to be made accessible to all political parties and the general public.

Joining him at the meeting were FLP vice-president Monica Raghwan and advisors Miriama Raiyawa and Satish Kumar.
