Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the recent actions taken by the Mercy Commission, which includes pardoning George Speight and Shane Stevens, were executed following appropriate procedures and without any outside influence.
Rabuka emphasized that these decisions should be viewed as part of Fiji’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and healing. He noted that the nation’s path toward unity and development necessitates reflection on its past, with a collective effort to create a brighter future.
He acknowledged that those who played a role in the nation’s unrest must accept responsibility for the setbacks in significant development initiatives.
Rabuka described the pardons as a positive step for those who have completed their prison sentences, affirming that they have fulfilled their obligations and can reintegrate into society.
He urged the citizens to embrace themes of forgiveness, truth, and reconciliation to foster a stronger and more united Fiji. The Prime Minister called on all Fijians to support the Coalition Government’s initiatives surrounding truth and reconciliation, which he deemed essential for the country’s growth and success.
