Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that the recent actions taken by the Mercy Commission, which included pardons for George Speight and Shane Stevens, were carried out following proper procedures without any outside influence. He emphasized that these decisions should be seen as part of Fiji’s ongoing reconciliation and healing efforts. According to Rabuka, reflecting on the nation’s past is essential for fostering unity and progress as Fiji strives to build a better future.
Rabuka acknowledged that those who have contributed to the country’s instability must accept their role in hindering major development. He described the pardons as a positive opportunity for individuals who have served their prison sentences, allowing them to reintegrate and contribute to society.
He called for a collective embrace of forgiveness, truth, and reconciliation to pave the way for a stronger and more unified Fiji. The Prime Minister urged all Fijians to support the Coalition Government’s initiatives aimed at truth and reconciliation, which he deemed crucial for the country’s growth and prosperity.
