Fiji’s Path to Reconciliation: A Bold Move by PM Rabuka

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the recent actions taken by the Mercy Commission, including the pardons granted to George Speight and Shane Stevens, were conducted in accordance with established procedures and without outside influence.

Rabuka emphasized that these decisions should be recognized as part of Fiji’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and healing, noting that the nation’s path toward unity and development necessitates a thoughtful reflection on its history and a collaborative effort to create a brighter future.

He remarked, “Those of us who contributed to our nation’s instability must take responsibility for the delays in major development progress,” highlighting the need for accountability.

The Prime Minister added, “It is a blessing for those who have served their terms in prison, as their release allows them to reintegrate and positively contribute to society.”

He further asserted that by fostering forgiveness, truth, and reconciliation, Fiji can advance collectively, building a stronger and more united nation.

Rabuka urged all Fijians to back the Coalition Government’s initiatives aimed at truth and reconciliation, which are essential for the country’s growth and prosperity.
