Fiji’s Path to Political Stability: A New Vision Unveiled

Ensuring political stability will be a primary focus of the government’s National Development Plan for 2025-2029. The plan recognizes the significant impact that coups have had on Fiji’s economic progress over the past 30 years.

A government report acknowledged the instability that has characterized Fiji’s development during this period, stating, “History indicates that economic, ecological, political, and global shocks do not discriminate against race and social status.” It emphasized the necessity for all Fijians to unite based on mutual respect, equal access, and co-existence.

The five-year strategy highlights the government’s commitment to good governance, accountability, and upholding the rule of law at all levels. The report asserts, “In any true democracy, the changing of democratically elected governments through force is unlawful and unconstitutional.”

The government aims to reshape Fiji’s political landscape to ensure stability. It will focus on raising awareness about the significance of national elections as the rightful means for citizens to express their democratic rights and choose their representatives in Parliament.

Moreover, the importance of protecting Fiji’s democracy was underscored, with the government pledging to explore all possible measures to ensure this is achieved.
