The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in Fiji must represent the country’s diverse population to achieve true justice and reconciliation. Litiana Lagibalavu, a member of the Alliance for Future Generations, emphasized the need for the TRC to include individuals with varied skills and backgrounds to effectively fulfill its mission.
Lagibalavu conveyed the hopes of Fiji’s youth, urging the TRC to reveal the nation’s history without re-traumatizing those affected. She called for a thorough and truthful account of the past, aimed at preventing the recurrence of historical mistakes and amplifying the voices of those who have been marginalized.
“We want the voices of the marginalized and oppressed to be heard, perhaps for the first time,” she stated. As representatives of the younger generation, they prioritize justice and fairness, asserting that every individual in Fiji deserves to have their story accurately told.
She highlighted the necessity of incorporating both in-person and online engagement strategies to connect with younger people, who predominantly use digital platforms. “The goal should be to offer those who have suffered in silence a chance to be heard, thus restoring dignity and justice,” she remarked.
Lagibalavu also urged that the TRC’s outcomes lead to substantial societal reforms, including governance changes, enhanced inter-ethnic relations, and solutions to issues related to colonization and displacement. She expressed a united hope that the commission will advance Fiji towards unity and equality, providing closure for communities affected by past wrongs.
“We, the youth of Fiji, are filled with hope for what this commission can achieve personally and collectively, not just for ourselves but for our parents, grandparents, and all who have endured in silence. We hope the commission will help us create a stronger, more united Fiji.”
