Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the recent actions taken by the Mercy Commission, including the pardons granted to George Speight and Shane Stevens, were conducted in accordance with proper procedures and without any outside influence.
Rabuka emphasized that these decisions should be seen as part of Fiji’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and healing. He noted that the country’s path toward unity and development necessitates reflection on the past and collaborative efforts to shape a better future.
He remarked, “Those of us who contributed to our nation’s instability must take responsibility for the delays in significant developmental progress.”
Rabuka expressed that the pardons can be seen as a positive opportunity for those who have completed their prison sentences, allowing them to reintegrate and positively contribute to society.
He concluded by highlighting the importance of embracing forgiveness, truth, and reconciliation to foster a stronger, more united Fiji. The Prime Minister is calling on all Fijians to support the Coalition Government’s initiatives aimed at achieving truth and reconciliation, which he regards as essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity.
