Fiji’s Path to Healing: Unveiling the Truth and Reconciliation Journey

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica emphasized that addressing historical grievances is a vital step toward national unity and progress. Speaking during the consultations for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he stated that establishing such a commission would allow the nation to confront its past conflicts and facilitate healing.

“The truth and reconciliation process is a conversation Fiji needs to have,” Mr. Kamikamica affirmed. He pointed out that the goal is to create a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to help reconcile with the past. “It is clear that we need to resolve these issues to move forward as a more united country,” he added.

While acknowledging the emotional intensity of the process, Mr. Kamikamica underscored its necessity for Fiji’s future. He expressed hope regarding the effectiveness of the commission, linking it to the Government’s commitment. “The effectiveness of this commission really depends on the commitment of this government,” he noted.

He stated that provided the terms of the commission’s work are well-defined, the Government is dedicated to its success and hopes to garner support from the Opposition as well. Mr. Kamikamica also stressed that national reconciliation, like constitutional reviews, is a matter for the nation as a whole rather than a political issue.

“I am confident that the Prime Minister will back the people, along with the Cabinet and ministers,” he stated. “This is certainly one approach to creating a better future for the people of Fiji.”
