Fiji’s Path to Healing: Truth and Reconciliation Commission Launched

Parliament’s establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is set to create a platform for both victims and perpetrators to share their experiences. Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad made this announcement during the launch of former Parliamentarian Harish Sharma’s memoir in Suva on Thursday.

Prof Prasad emphasized that the TRC will thoroughly investigate the nation’s historical conflicts and aid in bringing a conclusive end to Fiji’s troubling past. He acknowledged that Mr. Sharma’s memoirs reflect on events from 1987 onwards.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that while progress has been made, challenges lie ahead. He stated, “The past was fraught with danger. Now the future of freedom, hope and glory beckons.”

Additionally, Prof Prasad mentioned that the Coalition Government aims to move away from previous governance issues that plagued Fiji. “We have liberated Fiji from media restrictions, suppression of free speech, and the rights of workers,” he stated.

He acknowledged that this newfound freedom has led to criticism directed at the Coalition Government, describing much of it as malicious or humorous. However, he assured that the government will not suppress freedoms. He pointed out that the Coalition is the only post-election government in Fiji’s 54-year independent history that has remained in power for over a year following a change of government.
