Fiji’s Path to Healing: Truth and Reconciliation Commission Kicks Off Consultations

The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission conducted its inaugural consultation session, led by Assistant Minister for Women Sashi Kiran, yesterday. This initiative is designed to establish the legal framework and foundational principles of the Commission.

In September 2023, Parliament approved a motion to create the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and subsequently, the Cabinet formed a steering committee consisting of five appointed members.

Kiran addressed concerns regarding the perceived lack of progress and the limited public discourse surrounding the Commission. She acknowledged that it has taken time to bring these discussions to the forefront. “Over the past year, we have met with some of you individually and in small groups. These meetings occurred in safe environments, away from social media and news coverage, focusing on listening to people’s feelings and understanding our path forward,” Kiran stated.

The Assistant Minister highlighted the diverse perspectives gained from these engagements. She noted that the younger generation, particularly those aged 35 to 40, often shows little interest in the Commission, suggesting that funds be redirected to health and other programs. In contrast, individuals over 50, 60, and 70 years old, as well as families impacted in various ways, express feelings of pain, trauma, and anxiety about the Commission’s process.

Kiran emphasized that the framework is being developed carefully, integrating global principles while being mindful of local contexts, with the guidance of a UN consultant. “Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible, ensuring that we hear a wide range of voices so the framework benefits various sectors of society. The main aim is healing and achieving closure,” she remarked.

In the coming days, consultations will also involve legal professionals and political parties, with a call for submissions to contribute to this process. Plans are underway to conduct a national consultation that will reach out to communities in the Western and Northern Divisions.
