The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission conducted its inaugural consultation yesterday, led by Assistant Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran. The purpose of these consultations is to establish the legal framework and foundational structure for the Commission.
In September 2023, Parliament approved a motion to create the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, prompting the Cabinet to form a steering committee consisting of five appointed members. Kiran acknowledged concerns regarding the perceived inactivity of the Commission and addressed questions about progress, noting that public discussions have been slow to develop.
“Over the past year, we have had individual and small group meetings in secure environments. These discussions were not publicly documented on social media or through the news, as we focused on listening to how people feel and determining the best path forward, which is why we have taken time to reach this point,” Kiran explained.
The Assistant Minister highlighted the valuable insights gathered from various viewpoints during these consultations. She pointed out that younger individuals, particularly those aged 35 to 40, often show minimal interest in the Commission, suggesting that financial resources would be better allocated to health and other initiatives. Conversely, older individuals and families affected by past events expressed feelings of pain, trauma, and anxiety related to the reconciliation process.
Kiran emphasized that the framework is being developed with global principles in mind while also considering local contexts, with assistance from a UN consultant. “Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible, ensuring we hear a wide range of voices so that the framework accommodates various segments of society. Ultimately, our focus is on healing and providing closure,” she stated.
In the coming days, further consultations will take place with legal professionals and political parties, inviting submissions on the matter. Additionally, there are plans to hold a national consultation that will extend to the Western and Northern Divisions of Fiji.
