Fiji’s Path to Healing: The Power of Truth and Reconciliation

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has described the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as a beacon of hope dedicated to uncovering truth and fostering reconciliation for a more equitable, peaceful, and prosperous future.

During his address at the TRC Workshop, he emphasized that the Coalition Government has long promoted the establishment of the TRC to reflect on the troubling events of 1987, 2000, and 2006, with the aim of ensuring such occurrences are not repeated.

Kamikamica clarified that the TRC process focuses on recognizing past wrongs rather than placing blame or fostering divisions. It aims to provide a platform where victims can have their experiences acknowledged and validated. He stressed the importance of learning from history to build stability and what he termed genuine democracy.

He noted, “The TRC can be a powerful tool for addressing the legacies of conflict, injustice, and human rights violations, offering a structured framework for truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation.” He highlighted that through public hearings, investigations, and reports, the TRC aims to illuminate the darker aspects of our history and amplify the voices of those who have endured suffering.

However, he acknowledged the challenges faced in the TRC’s work, which can encounter resistance from those fearing the revelation of truths or desiring to uphold existing power structures. This endeavor, he noted, requires the active support and collaboration of government, civil society, and the public.

Kamikamica pointed out that the effectiveness of the TRC is not guaranteed. Its success hinges on the commitment of all stakeholders to participate earnestly, openly, and with a readiness to embrace change. He underlined the need for the Commission to operate independently, impartially, and free from political influence, as well as a sincere dedication to justice, human rights, and progress.

“Let us unite to ensure our efforts are not merely symbolic, but instead serve as a substantial step towards justice, healing, and peace. This initiative is not only about confronting our past; it is also about determining our future,” he concluded.
