The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) successfully wrapped up its eight-month Reconciliation and Restoration Program, which was designed to promote national healing and reconciliation. Launched in March, the program focused on encouraging RFMF officers to seek forgiveness from families affected by the turbulent events surrounding the May 2000 coup.
The conclusion of the program was marked by a significant celebration that included a wreath-laying ceremony honoring those who lost their lives 24 years ago. The event continued with a church service and a traditional “matanigasau” ceremony dedicated to the families of eight soldiers who perished during the 2000 mutiny, some of whom were members of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit.
His Excellency, President Ratu Williame Katonivere, attended the event, as did Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who emphasized the importance of forgiveness. He acknowledged the enduring pain these past events have inflicted on families, communities, and the nation, reiterating the need for healing.
This initiative represents a significant step toward mending the scars left by past conflicts and fostering unity in Fiji. It showcases how acknowledgment and reconciliation can play pivotal roles in moving forward, encouraging the nation to build a more harmonious future together.
In summary, the RFMF’s program has not only facilitated personal healing for many but has also set the stage for a collective journey toward peace in Fiji.
