The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has successfully wrapped up its eight-month Reconciliation and Restoration Program, designed to promote national healing and reconciliation. Launched in March, the program focused on bringing RFMF officers together to seek forgiveness from families affected by the tragic events of the May 2000 coup.
The closing ceremony took place yesterday and began with a wreath-laying event that honored those who lost their lives 24 years ago. This was followed by a church service and a traditional “matanigasau” ceremony, which was presented to the families of eight soldiers who died in the 2000 mutiny, many of whom were part of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit.
The event was attended by His Excellency, President Ratu Williame Katonivere, and was highlighted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s heartfelt call for forgiveness. He recognized the enduring pain that the past events have instilled in families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
This initiative represents a significant step toward healing and unity in Fiji. By confronting the past and engaging in open dialogue, the RFMF aims to build a more inclusive future where communities can come together to move past their grievances and foster a sense of togetherness. It is a hopeful reminder that acknowledging wounds can pave the way for reconciliation and understanding.
