Fiji’s Path to Healing: Can the TRC Change the Future?

The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, described the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as a beacon of hope aimed at uncovering the truth and fostering reconciliation to build a more just, peaceful, and prosperous future.

During a workshop focused on the TRC, Kamikamica highlighted that the Coalition Government has long promoted the establishment of this commission to reflect on the troubling events of 1987, 2000, and 2006 to prevent their recurrence.

Kamikamica emphasized that this initiative is not about blaming individuals or exacerbating divisions, but rather about recognizing past injustices and creating an environment where victims can have their experiences acknowledged and validated. He stated the importance of ensuring that the lessons learned from history are not forgotten and warned against the repetition of past mistakes, asserting that this approach is essential for fostering stability and genuine democracy.

He noted that the TRC serves as a vital mechanism for confronting the legacies of conflict, injustices, and human rights abuses, providing a structured approach for truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation. Through public hearings, investigations, and reporting, the TRC seeks to illuminate the darker facets of the nation’s history, amplifying the voices of those who have endured suffering.

Kamikamica acknowledged that the TRC’s efforts may be challenging and could face resistance from those wary of the truth or inclined to uphold existing power dynamics. He urged the necessity for support and collaboration across all sectors of society, including government, civil organizations, and the general populace.

The Acting Prime Minister asserted that the success of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is not assured and hinges largely on the dedication of all parties to participate with integrity, transparency, and an openness to change. He stressed the need for the Commission to operate independently and impartially, devoid of political influence, while also emphasizing a true commitment to justice, human rights, and advancement.

Kamikamica concluded by urging collective efforts to ensure that the TRC’s mission transcends mere symbolism and represents a significant stride toward justice, healing, and peace, framing this endeavor as not only a response to historical grievances but as a pivotal foundation for the future.
