Fiji’s Path to Healing: Are We Ready for Forgiveness?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the recent actions taken by the Mercy Commission, including the pardons of George Speight and Shane Stevens, were conducted in accordance with due process and without external influence.

Rabuka emphasized that these actions should be seen as part of Fiji’s ongoing efforts for reconciliation and healing, remarking that the nation’s journey toward unity and development requires reflection on past events and a collective effort to forge a better future.

He acknowledged that those who have played a role in the nation’s instability need to accept responsibility for the hindrances to significant developmental progress.

The Prime Minister described the situation as a positive opportunity for individuals who have served their sentences, as they can reintegrate into society and contribute once again.

He called for a commitment to forgiveness, truth, and reconciliation, asserting that these principles are essential for moving forward and building a more united Fiji. Rabuka is encouraging all Fijians to support the Coalition Government’s initiatives aimed at truth and reconciliation, which he views as crucial for the country’s growth and prosperity.
