The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has successfully wrapped up its eight-month initiative, the Reconciliation and Restoration Program, designed to promote national healing and reconciliation. Launched in March, the program was a reflective journey for RFMF officers, who sought forgiveness from the families affected by the May 2000 coup events.
The conclusion of the program was commemorated with a significant ceremony, which included laying wreaths in memory of those who lost their lives 24 years ago. This was followed by a church service and a traditional “matanigasau” presentation to the families of eight soldiers who were casualties of the 2000 mutiny; many of these soldiers served in the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit.
The event was attended by His Excellency, President Ratu Williame Katonivere, and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who emphasized the importance of forgiveness. He acknowledged the enduring pain from past events that still affects families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
In summary, this program not only highlights the need for healing in Fiji but also showcases the commitment of the RFMF and government leaders to address historical grievances, fostering a path towards unity and resilience within the nation. The acknowledgment of past wrongs can pave the way for a brighter future where collective healing can begin.
