Fiji’s Path to Democracy: Can Constitutional Reforms Unite the Nation?

Independent Member of Parliament Shalen Kumar has indicated strong support for the proposed Constitutional amendments under consideration in Parliament. Kumar expressed that the amendment bill represents a balance between safeguarding security and upholding democratic values. He voiced confidence in Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to transparent and inclusive governance, stating that fostering public trust is vital for citizens to engage in decision-making on critical constitutional reforms.

Kumar was one of four Independent MPs who voted to allow the Prime Minister to present the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. He believes that any changes made should reflect the will of the people and that public consultation is crucial during this reform process.

This ongoing parliamentary debate aligns with sentiments shared by other members, including Sachida Nand, Rinesh Sharma, and Sanjay Kirpal, who also advocate for amendments that would empower citizens and enhance the democratic process. Kumar’s confidence in the Prime Minister echoes themes of unity and collaboration, which are essential for navigating the complex landscape of governance in Fiji.

Previous discussions have highlighted that while the government holds approximately 70% of the parliamentary votes, it still requires a three-quarter majority for constitutional amendments, indicating a pressing need for cooperative dialogue across party lines. Prime Minister Rabuka has focused on fostering an inclusive governance framework that aligns with Fiji’s diverse society, aiming to promote unity and representation for all citizens.

This movement towards constitutional reform presents a hopeful opportunity for enhancing democratic values in Fiji. Through continued engagement and collaboration, there are promising prospects for creating an inclusive governance structure that resonates with the aspirations of the Fijian populace, paving the way for a brighter political future.
