Fiji’s Parliament is poised to elect a new Speaker during a session scheduled for tomorrow at 8 am. An advisory from Parliament indicates that attendance is by invitation only, but the proceedings will be live-streamed via Walesi and the Parliament’s Facebook page, making it accessible to the public.
Last month, Deputy Speaker Lenora Qereqeretabua clarified that the President-Elect Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu will officially assume his Constitutional duties only after taking the Oath for President. She also noted that the current Office of the Speaker will become vacant on November 12, 2024. Following the Standing Order 17 guidelines, a new Speaker will be appointed thereafter.
In a noteworthy development, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his intention to nominate Retired-Judge Justice Filimoni Jitoko for the Speaker position. The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, is expected to announce his nomination shortly.
According to Section 77(1)(a) of the relevant law, the election of the Speaker requires a simple majority vote and mandates that the candidate must be qualified to be a member of Parliament, even if they are not currently serving as one.
This election is significant for Fiji’s political landscape, as a new Speaker can play a crucial role in guiding legislative discussions and fostering a collaborative environment. The live-streaming of the session is also a positive step towards enhancing transparency and engaging more citizens in the democratic process.
Overall, this election paves the way for potential fresh perspectives and stronger governance in Fiji’s Parliament, making it a hopeful moment for the nation.
