Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has reported receiving numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who feel deeply saddened and disappointed by the Mercy Commission’s recent decision to pardon George Speight, the instigator of the 2000 Coup.
In his statement, Lal expressed that this decision has reopened painful memories for those who experienced significant losses during that tumultuous time—losses that affected family, livelihoods, and even forced many to leave Fiji for safety.
Lal emphasized that for many, the scars from the events of 2000 are still very fresh, and he stands in solidarity with those who recognize the lasting impact these events have had on their lives and the nation. He acknowledged the concerns of the community, asserting his commitment to represent their voices as they seek transparency and accountability from the coalition government.
“As your representative, I must be honest—while I hear and share your concerns, this is the reality we are living in and I do not have the authority to reverse or challenge the decision made. Please know that I deeply empathize with your pain, and while I cannot change what has happened, I will continue to represent your voices to the best of my ability,” Lal stated.
