Minister of Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has raised concerns about parenting practices in Fiji, highlighting that some parents resort to “extreme methods” in their efforts to educate their children. Her comments followed the emergence of a video showing a man from Nakasi verbally and physically reprimanding his children while attempting to teach them to count.
According to Minister Kiran, such aggressive parenting techniques are prevalent in Fiji, where approximately 72% of children have reportedly experienced some form of violence. She emphasized the urgent need for education and awareness regarding effective and nurturing parenting methods, particularly for younger parents who may lack support from extended family members.
Kiran stated that every child in Fiji deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from fear and harm. Additionally, she urged the public to be responsible when sharing sensitive content on social media, encouraging individuals to report incidents to the relevant authorities or the Ministry for timely intervention. She called for a collective effort to combat child violence, emphasizing that such actions can help foster a safer environment for children.
This situation highlights a critical social issue, reminding us of the importance of promoting positive parenting practices. Efforts to educate parents about non-violent disciplinary methods can lead to meaningful change, ultimately ensuring that all children have the opportunity to thrive in a supportive atmosphere.
