Minister of Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has raised concerns about the extreme parenting methods observed in Fiji, particularly in light of a disturbing video that surfaced today. The video depicted a man in Nakasi who was seen physically reprimanding his children while trying to teach them how to count.

Minister Kiran highlighted that such parenting practices are alarmingly common in Fiji, noting that recent statistics reveal approximately 72% of children in the country have faced some form of violence during their formative years. She emphasized that there is a crucial need for education and awareness around positive parenting techniques, specifically targeting younger parents who may lack the guidance of extended family members.

Kiran stressed the fundamental right of every child in Fiji to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, devoid of fear and harm. She also called upon the public to be responsible when sharing sensitive material on social media, suggesting that instead of circulating such videos, individuals should report incidents directly to the appropriate authorities or the Ministry for prompt intervention.

The issue of child violence is one that requires a concerted effort from the community, and Kiran’s comments reflect a growing recognition of the need for change and improvement in parenting practices.

In a hopeful light, this situation presents an opportunity for schools, communities, and local organizations to come together to promote workshops and programs that educate parents on effective, compassionate parenting strategies that can help break the cycle of violence. Such collaboration could pave the way for fostering a healthier, more supportive environment for the children of Fiji.
