Fiji’s Para Athletes: A Journey of Resilience and Hope Ahead of the Mini Games

Team Fiji’s Para Athletics team is garnering recognition for their remarkable resilience and dedication to the sport as they prepare for the Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled from June 29 to July 9, 2025. Recent successes highlight the athletes’ capabilities, as demonstrated during the 2023 Pacific Games where they secured two medals in the women’s javelin ambulant event—Selina Sanday clinched silver while Naibili Vatunisolo achieved bronze.

With a committed group comprised of six athletes under the guidance of coach Fred Fatiaki and section manager Kumon Tarawa, the Para Athletics team is set to join their male counterparts in contributing to Team Fiji’s medal tally at the upcoming Mini Games. Athletes like Selina and Naibili exemplify the spirit of perseverance, having overcome significant physical challenges to excel in their disciplines.

In alignment with other sports, Team Fiji is also leveraging community support to raise funds necessary for their participation. The team is facing financial pressures, with a planned budget of $3.5 million to cover costs including a levy of $3,000 per athlete. To assist in offsetting these expenses, they have initiated a lottery program where tickets are priced affordably at $2 each. The proceeds will play a crucial role in ensuring athletes can represent Fiji on an international platform without financial burdens hindering their potential.

Furthermore, the positive engagement from various sporting federations reinforces a collective ambition that extends beyond competition—this is an opportunity to foster national pride and support young athletes’ future aspirations, including pathways to larger competitions such as the Olympics. As the games approach, the hope and determination within Team Fiji serve as powerful motivators, inspiring athletes and communities alike to rally behind their efforts for great success.

Team Fiji’s journey to the Pacific Mini Games embodies not just sporting prowess but also a shared sense of community and resilience. With continued support and a united front, there is optimism that the athletes will shine brightly in Palau, marking a positive chapter in Fiji’s sporting narrative.
