Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has expressed that he has received numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who feel deeply saddened and disappointed by the recent statement from the Mercy Commission regarding the potential pardon of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.
In his statement, Lal noted that this decision has reopened wounds for many who suffered losses during that time, including loss of family, livelihoods, and the necessity to leave Fiji for safety during those challenging days. He emphasized that the scars from the 2000 events remain fresh in the memories of many, and he stands in solidarity with those affected, recognizing the significant impact these events have had on their lives and the country as a whole.
“As your representative, I must be truthful—while I hear and understand your concerns, this is the reality we face, and I lack the authority to reverse or contest the decision made. Please know that I genuinely empathize with your pain. While I cannot alter the past, I will continue to represent your voices to the best of my ability in our ongoing fight for transparency and accountability from the coalition,” Lal stated.
