The wounds from the events of 2000 remain significant for many individuals. Reflecting on the recent pardon of 2000 coup leader George Speight, Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal stated that he lacks the power to reverse or challenge this decision. Speight was among seven individuals granted a Presidential pardon on Thursday, following a review by the Mercy Commission, which assessed the petition for mercy the day prior.
Lal expressed that he has received numerous heartfelt messages from fellow Fijians who feel deeply saddened and disappointed by the decision to pardon Speight. He acknowledged the profound impact this situation has had on the nation and its people.
“I want to express my recognition of the pain and anger you are feeling. This decision has reopened old wounds for those who experienced loss—whether of family, businesses, or even the need to leave our country for safety during that troubling time,” Mr. Lal remarked.
He voiced his empathy toward those affected and, although he cannot alter the past, he pledged to continue advocating for government transparency and accountability for all Fijians.
