“Fiji’s Painful Past: Opposition MP Reacts to Controversial Pardoning Statement”

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed that he has received numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who are grieving and disappointed by the recent announcement from the Mercy Commission regarding the pardon of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.

In his statement, Lal noted that this decision has reopened past wounds for individuals who experienced significant loss, whether it involved family, livelihoods, businesses, or those who had to flee the country during those turbulent times.

He acknowledged that the scars from the events of 2000 are still vivid for many people. “I stand with you in recognizing the deep impact this has had on your lives and our nation,” he said.

“As your representative, I must be candid—while I hear and share your concerns, we must face the reality we are in, and I do not have the power to overturn or contest this decision. Please know that I truly empathize with your suffering, and although I cannot alter the past, I will continue to voice your concerns in our ongoing effort to hold the coalition accountable and ensure transparency for all Fijians,” Lal added.
