The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has launched an off-season athletics training camp to provide young athletes from smaller schools with essential training opportunities throughout the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou recognized the pressing need for structured training after witnessing many talented students struggle and even faint during competitions due to inadequate fitness levels.

In response to these concerns, Tafao’ou proposed the training camp, which has seen a positive reception, enrolling approximately 35 participants since its inception weeks before Christmas. With a nominal fee of $20 per week, the camp runs for six weeks, concluding on January 24, just ahead of the inter-house competitions scheduled for February.

The training program focuses on foundational athletic skills such as block starts and endurance running, and is orchestrated by experienced former athletes, including Olympian Albert Miler and sprinting star Banuve Tabakaucoro. In addition to athletic skills, the camp also emphasizes the importance of discipline and time management, which parents have noted as beneficial changes in their children’s routines.

Tafao’ou highlighted the camp’s commitment to inclusivity, encouraging athletes from all backgrounds to participate. Many young athletes, who were previously daunted by competing against more experienced peers, are now feeling more confident and excited about the upcoming inter-house events.
