The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is currently conducting an off-season athletics training camp aimed at empowering young athletes from less prominent schools during their holiday break. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou underscored the significance of this initiative, noting that while many students exhibit talent, they often lack structured training, which can lead to injuries and diminished performance in competitions.
Tafao’ou shared his concern, stating, “It’s sad to see the kids faint or get injured during competitions due to being unfit.” This prompted him to propose an inclusive training camp, which has received positive response, attracting 35 participants who pay a modest fee of $20 per week. The camp runs for six weeks, concluding on January 24, just before the inter-house competitions commence in February.
Under the guidance of experienced coaches, including former Olympic sprinter Albert Miler and Pacific sprint star Banuve Tabakaucoro, attendees are learning essential skills such as block starts and endurance training. The comprehensive program not only focuses on physical training but also instills discipline and time management, crucial for athletes at any level. Tafao’ou mentioned the observable improvement in participants’ routines, as parents report positive changes in their children’s time management and commitment.
Commenting on the camp’s impact, Tafao’ou expressed hope that it will encourage those who previously hesitated to compete, stating that many youngsters were intimidated by established champions at their schools. However, after participating in the training camp, they are eager to showcase their skills.
This initiative fosters a sense of community among athletes with diverse backgrounds, aiming to level the playing field. By offering quality coaching to all students, despite their school’s resources, the FSC is working towards nurturing a new generation of athletes ready to compete on both national and international stages.
In summary, the off-season athletics training camp not only equips young athletes with necessary skills but also cultivates a supportive environment that encourages growth and confidence. This program symbolizes a hopeful step towards a more equitable athletic landscape in Fiji, ensuring that talent can flourish regardless of background. The continued success of such initiatives could set the stage for future champions and contribute positively to the sports culture in Fiji.
