Fiji’s Oceanic Alliance: A New Dawn for Maritime Security?

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration held a conference for the Maritime Security Committee to enhance safety and security at Fiji’s borders. The two-day event, backed by the Government of the United Kingdom and UNDP, gathered key stakeholders from the maritime security sector and academics from King’s College London to discuss the protection of Fiji’s seaports and broader maritime territory.

The conference highlighted the unique challenges of safeguarding Fiji’s extensive oceanic domain and celebrating the rich maritime heritage that has influenced both Fiji and the wider Pacific region for centuries. It emphasized collaboration between King’s College and the Maritime Security Committee to strengthen interagency maritime policy, legislative authority, and strategic insights to protect the Blue Pacific through established partnerships.

During the conference, Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua proposed the creation of an Oceanic Alliance for the Security of Island States, termed “OASIS.” He stated that this alliance would serve as a formal platform to address security challenges collectively, such as combating transnational organized crime, responding to climate change, and preventing illegal fishing.

Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of unity among Pacific Island States, stating, “Only together, and with our partners, can we raise our voices and secure our shared future. OASIS would serve as a beacon of this unity—a proactive step towards safeguarding our maritime areas from the growing external pressures.”

The workshop aimed to promote collaboration among agencies and explore opportunities for preserving and protecting maritime areas for future generations.

British High Commissioner to Fiji, Dr. Brian Jones, pointed out that maritime security involves more than just surface issues; it also includes underwater infrastructure. He noted the complexity of the current environment and stressed the need for determination and ambition in tackling these challenges.
