Fiji’s Ocean Under New Protection: What’s the Blue Prosperity Program?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reiterated Fiji’s dedication to safeguarding and sustainably managing its ocean territory through the Memorandum of Understanding on the Blue Prosperity Fiji program, established between the Fiji Government and the US-based Waitt Institute.

During a meeting with Ted Waitt, the founder of the institute, Rabuka praised their continued support for Fiji’s sustainable ocean management efforts and the progress in shared interests.

The MoU, which was signed last year, focuses on implementing the Blue Prosperity Fiji program and supports the government in three main areas: marine spatial planning, sustainable fishing practices, and initiatives to promote the blue economy.

Additionally, the Waitt Institute is committed to assisting Fiji in executing the 30 by 30 initiative, which seeks to designate 30 percent of Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zones as marine protected areas by 2030.

Prime Minister Rabuka informed Mr. Waitt that considerable advancements have been made through the MoU, with involved parties collaborating effectively to fulfill their commitments.

Mr. Waitt expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the meeting, offering his complete support for the implementation of the Blue Prosperity Fiji program and other related initiatives.

The Blue Prosperity Fiji program emphasizes community and stakeholder involvement, scientific research, traditional knowledge, and collaboration with government agencies and NGOs.

The program, led by the government, aims to enhance long-term economic stability, improve livelihoods, support communities, and protect ocean ecosystems.

It receives backing from various government departments, including the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, and the Ministry of Finance.
